2018 Sued For Having Been Too Modern

Image
Womble family sue 2018 for having been too modern A family from Ventnor, NJ are trying to sue 2018 for being too modern. Mr. & Mrs. Womble Last Weekend "There's a natural order in the universe," said father of two, Dick Womble. "And that's the order ordained by God." According to Mr Womble, the invention of indoor plumbing, supermarkets, television and the internet are not in the Bible and therefore ungodly and to be shunned. Whilst the Jersey Shore is still part of the USA, Mr Womble will be petitioning the Courts so that he may sue 2018 for having existed. "Our children have had to share a school with boys who wear dresses," Mr Womble said. "My wife and I are disgusted." "I'm disgusted," said Mrs Henrietta Womble, "at everything my husband has said." We asked them how many boys wearing dresses attended their daughter's school. "Well, none" said Mrs. Womble. "We Homeschool so that our d...

Trump Nominates Judge Dredd To Supreme Court

Image
Washington, D.C., USA -- United States President Donald Trump has nominated Judge Dredd to be seated on the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS). The surprise pick of Dredd is said to be Trump's idea as he likes a lawyer who isn't afraid to waste people while working. "Judge Dredd ticks all the right boxes," said Trump. "He is strong on Law and Order and won't be sitting all day in a court room, but going out there and dispensing American Justice via the 2nd amendment...that's the fuckin'   American Way . Dredd is my type of lawman". Dredd has been a popular judge since he first appeared on the legal circuit 40 years ago. He is a lifelong Conservative and strong believer in the Second Amendment . Supporters of Dredd say he will save a 'ton of money' by dispensing justice with on-the-spot-fines and executions. Opponents of Dredd say he is a bad communicator and speaks only in grunts. He was also responsible fo...

Abortive Sorrows and Short-winded Elations - IN DEFENSE OF ROMANTICISM

Image
The title of this post is taken from the American classic novel "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I n music, it's said that the romantic period (and it's overblown excesses) ended with Wagner. That may be so. It brings to mind the quote oft attributed to Mark Twain (yes it sounds like his work, but it was actually Bill Nye [not our Science Guy, but the journalist-humorist ]   " Richard Wagner's music is better than it sounds”. It's a densely packed statement. But what exactly is romanticism? And why do we need it now? I posit that romanticism is hardly a "sweetness", as many may conjure up. There is nothing particularly sugary about being dark and tormented, the furor of passion, nor the despair of an idealism that can not be attained. Yet that is what the core of romanticism is composed of. Nor is it merely adjective abuse. It's more than an aesthetic in decor. So what is it then? Ideals. Perhaps Ideals have m...

"News From Nowhere" - An 1890 Novel Revisited

Image
Written in 1890 by William Morris "News from Nowhere" is a compelling formulation of his views on art, work, community, family, and the nature and structure of the ideal society. One might say it's a Utopian narrative or something like science fiction, but without question, it is an immensely entertaining novel. And one that has cause for resonance today. You can read the work yourself here at no cost. William Morris (1834-1896) is probably best-known today as a Victorian designer whose work has never gone out of fashion. You can buy Morris merchandise – from coasters to picture frames to ties to mugs – in the gift shops of every big design museum.  Do an internet search of  his name, and your screen will fill up with cascades of dense, colorful ornaments. But Morris was also a radical thinker,  and his novel "News from Nowhere" (1890),  has striking applications in the internet era. In "News from Nowhere", Morris imagined a world in which hu...

Entropy & Empire (or A House Is Not A Hole)

Image
T here likely is an American dream, some sort of aspiration hidden in an old coffee can buried somewhere beneath the grave of Thomas Paine.  But there is also an American nightmare, an empty, cold, heartless, mundane banality sucking the life force from all it encounters. America is not without virtue mind you, but its people have been, and remain dangerously hypnotized. L ong before Trumpism,  and it's associated demise of decency, honesty, and intelligence in public matters turned us into a nation of cretins and morons; the decline of the empire was well under way. A fair warning dear reader, most people who write about the dystopian nature of a society will try in the end, to offer some hope of redemption. This is not what you'll find here. If you're looking for a "feel good" uplifting piece that offers some pie in the sky remedy with a happy ending, you'll not find that here. I can not honestly be optimistic in this regard. There's a f...
